Legacy Fitness
Legacy Fitness is a non-profit fitness organization within Butler County, PA that empowers individuals of all ages to lead healthy lifestyles through fitness and movement. Two of their biggest focuses is providing services to the Adapted Needs and Parkinson’s Communities.
From Jan 2024 to May 2024, Legacy was a community partner for a Project Management course at SRU. From May 2024 to Aug 2024, I continued working with Legacy as a sole Digital Media & Marketing intern.
Community Partner Case Study
For this Case Study, I worked with a five member team with my peers to assist an organization in the areas of graphic design, web design/development, social media, video production, and campaign development. The primary goal of the case study was to allow my team to go through the entire process of analyzing, designing, developing, implementing and evaluating print and digital media communication materials to address the goals and interests of the organization.
The organization my team was assigned to is Legacy Fitness, a non-profit gym in Butler County, PA that offers a variety of classes like wrestling, children fitness, adult fitness, boxing and gymnastics. At the time, the most unique aspect that this organization wants to showcase is their Adapted Needs Classes. They found that people who have intellectual and developmental needs usual don't have a place to practice fitness. The two owners, Katie Werner and Scott Stoner, provide a fitness class for these persons to build a fun and inviting community where they can focus on movement, agility, & strength training within a group setting.
My Team Role
My role in my team was Photographer and Videographer. Harley Wolfgang was the lead Video Producer, but I was gathering content for my team members to use for our deliverables we proposed with our client. I followed the guidelines and tasks delegated by my Project Manager, Katie Shope.
Digital Media Internship
While I was looking for internship opportunities in my senior year, I gave Katie Werner and Scott Stoner to see if they were open to me continuing the work my team built for them and implement our workbook. They were more than happy to have me. For the next couple of months, I did a couple of things for them where at the time, it didn’t seem like much, but my role served a very important purpose for Legacy.
What I did was capture content to post on their social media, continuously update their website as needed, generate any graphic design materials, and occasionally step in for Katie at a networking group. These together wasn’t an insanely fulfilling task, however, Katie brought me into her operating sphere and walked me through what she wanted to accomplish for Legacy. Her team consisted of five coaches spread across six different fitness classes that were taught weekly at various times, and with the addition of me, she had a conduit to capture these classes and take that workload off of her to focus on bigger goals for Legacy. During the internship, Legacy’s big goals was developing their Parkinson’s program. Katie reached out to Parkinson Foundation of Western Pennsylvania and had an open house to bring awareness. Bringing me along in this process provided me more value into the internship because she relied on me as someone who knew the digital realm and could express ideas I could help guide to achieve.
Attending her networking chapter meetings through Business Networking International (BNI) was honestly the diamond in the rough as someone who was starting my professional journey. I got to sit in Katie’s place and be a witness to what her world was like as a non-profit owner and what a team can provide for the group and professional relationships.
Going back to my community and experience values, interacting with the Adapted Needs and Parkinson's communities was something that gave me appreciation for. Helping Katie and Scott’s vision of providing a service and trying to figure out how to give that to the Butler community and more was something that helped me know who and what I want to work for when it came to finding my career.
